The greatest bowler of all time?

by

Were it not for umpires’ tendency to not give batsmen out LBW when they take a stride forward, Kumble could very well have the most tally of wickets in cricket at this point. I’ve noticed this a lot. Kumble gets batsmen out LBW a lot, but only a small fraction of those are given (mostly because the batsman takes a step forward). Kumble’s habits don’t help him much either: he appeals just as vociferously for balls pitching outside leg or clearly missing the stumps, which is just plain ridiculous. Kumble doesn’t impart too much spin or bounce on the ball, so he’s hitting the stumps a lot. On all kinds of pitches, against all kinds of batsmen. While watching on TV, I can tell that; and Hawkeye usually confirms that. So, he has so many valid LBW shouts that aren’t even entertained by the umpires.

Technological assistance will help him, whenever it gets here. Hawkeye’s not going to be offiicial anytime soon, so Kumble might never have the benefit of that technology. But just being able to re-appeal against the on-field umpire’s decisions should help.

  1. Angshuman Says:

He is the greatest Indian cricketer I’ve seen in 20 plus years, and that is very big indeed.

  2. Amar Says:

Are you out of your mind? Kapil took 434 wickets on home pitches that were not exactly seamer friendly; Gavaskar broke Bradman’s record of the most # of centuries in test cricket; Tendulkar, well, he is Tendulkar; and Dravid. You put all these names behind Kumble?

  3. Sean Says:

No offense to any of you, but if Shane Warne isn’t considered the best bowler of all time they should probably stop playing the game. However, both Kapil and Kumble are great bowlers. A sign of this is how many wickets they took against the best teams in their era – Kapil took 89 wickets against the Windies and Kumble has his most wickets against Australia.

I think Kapil is better though when you consider that about 51% of his wickets came in India on tracks that aren’t pace friendly whereas Kumble has picked up about 66% of his wickets in India on very, VERY friendly wickets for spin bowling.

Glenn McGrath has a higher wickets/match ratio than Kapil in India though, McGrath averages just over 4 wickets a match in India whereas Kapil averaged about 3.5. Shows how good McGrath is.

I think we need to consider when the candidates played; who they played against; what bowlers in their own side they were competing against for scalps and how they fared against the best batsmen of their eras.
    My list:
    1. Lillee – competing with Thomson, Mallett, Walker, Alderman, Hogg
    2. Hadlee – competing against ……?
    3. Warne – competing against McGrath
    4. McGrath – competing against Warne
    4. Murali – competing against Vaas
    5. Marshall, Holding, Roberts, Garner – competing against each other.

Like most subjects in cricket – we could spend hours discussing this without reaching a definitive conclusion. But that is part of the fun.
Everyone on the list is a great bowler – do we really need to place one above all others?

  15. Pratik Says:

@jrhurls Yes, there are many things to consider, and there might be no clear answer (except McGrath — he truly has been better than any bowler I have ever seen). I wrote this post after watching the last day’s play of a Test match. Now that umpires are more comfortable (thanks to technology) giving batsmen out LBW on the front foot, Kumble would have certainly fared better (although I am not sure just how much better).

  16. Stefan Says:

No use of any unwanted speeches.. Every 1 knows MURALI is the best… Actually he is the most successful bowler ever.. I think he became the best because of his natural way of living & his attitude n others.. People might laugh; but “GOOD BECOMES GREAT”. Sir i respect you alot & i wish you a better life ever!!!

YOU ARE THE BEST; SIR MUTTIAH MURALIDARAN!!!!!

  17. Shaun Says:

Murali THE VERY VERY VERY////////// BEST BOWLER IN THE WORLD>>>>>>

  18. kevin Says:

    earl anthony you freakin morons!

  19. jw121293 Says:

of the modern day bowlers murali would be the bowling equivalent of bradman, statistically that far ahead of the rest, warne would be the equivalent of headley and mark curtly, the only ten for in tests in an innings was laker in 1956 ( you might mean in a test overall).

the real test is who is the most difficult to score runs from and not get out-ask the premier batsman such as tendulker, kallis, ponting, strauss etc.

  20. Cricket lover Says:

    Good ideas….
But i think MUTTIAH MURALIDARAN is the most successeful bowler ever…

  21. anojtharan Says:

no doubt its one person he dominat all international cricket

“the king of sprin” Muththiah Muralitharan
